How Keeping Cool at Night Helps You Sleep Longer
Quality sleep is vital to our overall health and wellbeing and no, an extra cup of coffee doesn’t replace those precious hours! Poor sleep has been linked to a number of health issues, including cardiovascular issues. One of the ways we’ve all been told to improve the quality of our sleep is to keep cool - but why?
Our body operates on a circadian rhythm. This is our 24 hour “body clock” that dictates when we feel sleepy or awake. Our circadian rhythm also dictates other changes in our body (like internal temperature) and is affected by external factors (like room temperature). When we sleep, our body temperature naturally lowers and is lowest a few hours before we naturally wake up. If our room or bed is too hot, it becomes more difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends a temperature of 60-67°F to promote restful sleep. Try taking a cool shower before bed or if you take a hot bath or shower, give your body temperature a few hours to cool down. Wear pajamas in cooling fabrics, like linen or microfiber. Try not to exercise, eat or drink alcohol too close to bedtime, and make sure your thermostat is also set to a comfortably cool temperature. While keeping your bedroom cool is a good idea, don’t take it too far! Feeling too cold at night is not beneficial for sleep. You have to find the sweet spot that works for your body.
While we can’t change the temperature of your room, PeachSkinSheets will keep you cool all night long to not only help you fall asleep, but stay asleep all night long. Our performance SMART fabric also wicks away sweat so that if you do run hot at night, you won’t wake up sweaty!
